Toby Summerfield: Bass ~ Guitar ~ Upright Bass
After seeing “Back to the Future” at age 8, Toby became enchanted with the electric guitar and started studying it with Steve Osburn, a Montessori-trained educator. Toby emulates the same teaching style, which includes lots of knowledge, patience, and kindness!
In high school, Toby played in the jazz band and also began studying electric bass, jazz theory / performance, and jazz education with Mike Grace, a recipient of Disney’s coveted Teacher of the Year award. While also in high school, Toby began to perform professionally, playing gigs in clubs and restaurants, wedding receptions, and corporate events.
Originally from Ann Arbor, MI, Toby moved to Chicago in 2001 to seek new opportunities in music only available in the melting pot that is Chicago music. Toby has been teaching with us since 2001 and continues to tour and perform regularly, as well as record CDs whenever possible.
“Music is the number one passion in my life, and it is a real joy for me to be able to share that passion with my students. I strive to tailor curriculum to each individual student, showing them technique and theory through the music that they love.”
